Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe are set to star in two Yorgos Lanthimos feature films, Poor Things and AND. Though the pair are working together for two films, it was only in the movie AND that the actress apparently had to slap the actor, as reported by The New York Times. The slapping event occurred off-screen, and Willem Dafoe wasn’t even part of the scene.
The actress couldn’t help but admire the veteran actor for his good-natured personality. She said, “There’s this instinct to perform that many actors have — the ‘look at me, look at me!’ kind of performer. He’s the opposite of that. Maybe it’s changed through the years. A lot of actors I bond with have been doing this for a long time, and you know they’ve gone from ‘I’ to ‘We.’”
This was after the actor reportedly let the actress slap him over 20 times for a scene he’s not even a part of. The New York Times reports the fascinating details about the film production of You. It was further revealed that the actor wasn’t supposed to be on set that day and just came to help the actress get into her film role.
Dafoe felt like Stone needed to interact with him behind the scenes to get used to her character. It doesn’t matter if it involves Dafoe getting slapped; if it can help his co-star, he’s gonna do it. He apparently agreed to let Stone slap him as many times as needed. Film director Lanthimos commended Dafoe and said, pertaining to the actor coming on set even though he doesn’t need to, “That’s what you want from actors. To want to be part of it in any way.”
Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos are back with another film offering, and this time they’re returning for much bigger projects. Five years after the impressive run of the film The Favourite at the box office in 2018, the pair teams up again in two feature films, Poor Things and You. Aside from starring in the movie, Stone will also co-produce the film along with Yorgos Lanthimos and Andrew Love.
Poor Things is a film based on a 1992 novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray. It tells the tale of a woman, played by Emma Stone, who was brought back from the dead by replacing her brain with her unborn child’s. On the other hand, the film AND hasn’t released much information about its plotline.
